Avenue Montaigne is the heart of Parisian haute couture. It is a place of absolute refinement, and I wanted to create a piece worthy of its elegance. It all began with a question I asked Gabriela: what leather accessory would she love to carry every day? Her answer was immediate: a clutch. To design it, I drew inspiration from the architecture of Japanese torii gates, reflected in its delicately curved upper line. The Montaigne embodies the “East meets West” spirit that is so dear to me, complementing every elegant occasion, from day to evening.

Located in Le Puy-en-Velay, in the Auvergne region, Tanneries du Puy is renowned worldwide for its expertise in calf leather. The tannery has long supplied some of the most prestigious French luxury houses. Its leathers are distinguished by their structure, fineness, and consistency. We selected its textured calf leather for the Élysée bag, for its structure and resistance to scratches, as well as its grained calf leather for the Montaigne clutch.

Before it was called Paris, the city was known as Lutetia, or Lutèce in French. It all began on the Île de la Cité, in the middle of the Seine. When I designed the house’s first bag, I wanted to return to these origins. To go back to the beginning is to return to what is essential, to what remains unchanged. The Lutece was born from this idea: a pure silhouette, a clasp that opens and closes effortlessly, a timeless elegance with a modern touch. I like to think that, just like the city whose ancient name it carries, it was made to stand the test of time.

The 7th arrondissement is home to the Eiffel Tower, Les Invalides, and the Musée d’Orsay. It is also the embassy district, where French tradition meets the rest of the world. This meeting of heritage and openness resonates with me, as it reflects the story of our house, between Japan and France. The Septième embodies this spirit: a structured, precise silhouette, and our first collection entirely dedicated to smooth leather, with its subtle natural sheen. A bag I wanted to be both understated and distinctive.

TANNERIES ROUX
Romans-sur-Isère, since 1803

Since 1803, Tanneries Roux has passed down its expertise from generation to generation in Romans-sur-Isère, the historic heart of French shoemaking. More than two centuries of experience have established this tannery as a trusted name among leading leather goods, footwear, and fashion houses. It is here that we discovered the smooth calf leather used in our Septième collection, our first line entirely dedicated to smooth leather, selected for its subtle natural sheen.

Passy was once a village before becoming part of Paris. It has retained something of its past: a sense of calm, greenery, and an understated elegance that has nothing to prove. This is the side of Paris I wanted to capture in the Passy. Neither entirely structured nor entirely soft, it is carried with the same effortless ease as a stroll through the neighborhood’s streets. For this bag, we created a new signature closure, entirely covered in leather, that opens with one fluid gesture. A detail you may not notice at first, but one you will appreciate every day.

Place Colette lies between the Palais-Royal and the Comédie-Française. It is named after the writer Colette, who lived for many years overlooking the gardens of the Palais-Royal. I love this corner of Paris, where literature, theater, and art come together within just a few steps. The Colette bag also brings together different worlds: the small silk pouches still worn with kimonos in the streets of Tokyo, and the refined drawstring purses depicted in medieval French manuscripts. I wanted to create a delicate and precious piece, for those who carry their essentials with grace.

The Odéon neighborhood, surrounding the theater and just steps from the Luxembourg Gardens, is one of my favorite places on the Left Bank. Bookshops, small cinemas, lively cafés: culture is part of everyday life here, without ceremony. I wanted the Odéon bag to embody that same effortless elegance. It is a bucket bag with a clean, minimalist silhouette, worn crossbody during the day and carried by hand in the evening. A bag that follows the rhythm of the city, from morning until an evening at the theater.

The Élysée neighborhood, between the presidential palace and the Champs-Élysées, embodies for me a certain sense of French precision and discipline. Every façade makes a statement, every detail matters. This is the same level of excellence I wanted to bring to the Élysée bag. For this design, we created curved oval eyelets that perfectly follow the shape of the flap. It was a true technical challenge, and one I am particularly proud of. Structured, thoughtfully organized, and lined with nappa lambskin, the Élysée is a bag for those who appreciate exceptional craftsmanship.

The first time you discover the Palais Garnier, its grand marble staircase and gilded details leave an unforgettable impression. Around it, the neighborhood pulses with the energy of the grands boulevards. To me, the Opéra represents Parisian splendor at its most joyful. I wanted the Opéra bag to capture that spirit: a double-handle design with soft curves that gently balance its classic geometric shape. It transitions effortlessly from a day in the city to an evening at the theater.

Seen from above, the Place de l’Étoile forms a perfect star: twelve avenues radiating from the Arc de Triomphe. To me, this monument is one of the great symbols of Paris, and I wanted to incorporate its spirit into the bag. That is why the Étoile’s padlock pays tribute to it. The bag is crafted from a single piece of leather, giving it a surprising lightness. I imagine it being carried just as effortlessly in the city as in the countryside. With a silk scarf tied around its handle, it embodies the French chic I love.

The Tuileries Garden, between the Louvre and Place de la Concorde, is for me the perfect example of a French formal garden. The precisely laid-out paths, the fountains, the sweeping perspectives: everything is a matter of balance and proportion. It is an art of composition that deeply resonates with me. For the Tuileries, I revisited the silhouette of our Salut model and refined its proportions to find the perfect balance between structure and softness. On the outside, a classic elegance. On the inside, a luminous lining, like a sunlit stroll through the garden.

Behind its arcades, the Palais-Royal Garden is one of Paris’s best-kept secrets. You almost stumble upon it by chance, discovering its tree-lined paths, galleries, and Buren’s iconic columns. To me, it is a hidden treasure in the heart of the city. This image brought back memories of the treasure chests from my childhood fairy tales. From this inspiration, the Palais Royal bag was born: a rounded flap, hinges, and a generous opening. I imagined it as a place to hold what is most precious to you.

From the Trocadéro esplanade, the view of the Eiffel Tower is one of the most beautiful in Paris. Looking at it, I was reminded of the torii gate of Miyajima in Japan, which I discovered during my travels. Though these two structures seem worlds apart, they share the same harmony between straight lines and curves. This connection left a profound impression on me. With the Trocadéro, I sought to bring these two inspirations together in a single silhouette, where French elegance meets Japanese simplicity. Perhaps this is the bag that best tells the story of who we are.

The Seine flows through Paris from east to west, from bridge to bridge, from one riverbank to another. To me, it is the thread that connects every neighborhood of the city, and therefore every bag of the house. I love walking along its banks, where Paris gradually reveals itself. The Seine bag captures this same sense of movement: a canvas tote enhanced with our signature leather, designed to accompany you every day, whether at work, on weekends, or while traveling.

Rue de Rivoli stretches across Paris from east to west, beneath its arcades and alongside the Louvre and the Tuileries. It is a street constantly in motion. Every time I walk along it, I encounter Parisians hurrying to work and leisurely strollers taking their time to admire the shop windows. To me, Rivoli embodies the very rhythm of Paris. I wanted the bag to reflect this spirit, even in its two formats, East/West and North/South. Reversible, supple, and lightweight, the Rivoli is designed for a life in motion, from Monday morning through Sunday.

Saint-Germain-des-Prés is, to me, the neighborhood where Parisian elegance is part of everyday life. You can enjoy a coffee on a terrace, wander through bookshops, then stroll along the paths of the Luxembourg Gardens. Together with Risa Tsuzuki, we set ourselves a challenge: to reinvent the traditional diaper bag and transform it into an accessory you would truly want to carry. That is how the Saint-Germain was born. It holds everything from a laptop to a newborn’s essentials, without ever compromising on style. This is what I love about the Left Bank: beauty and practicality go hand in hand.

During the Roaring Twenties, Montparnasse was the neighborhood of artists who came from all over the world. It is also home to the Gare Montparnasse, where trains depart for western France and the ocean. To me, this name evokes departure, curiosity, and the desire to explore new horizons. It was only natural to give it to our travel bag. I wanted to create a bag to take on a weekend getaway or carry alongside a suitcase on longer journeys, one whose leather develops a beautiful patina with every trip. With the Montparnasse Nano, I wanted to bring that same spirit of freedom into everyday city life.

The Musée d’Orsay is one of the places in Paris that moves me the most. It was once a railway station, built for the 1900 World's Fair. Today, beneath its magnificent glass roof, it houses some of the most beautiful Impressionist paintings. I love the idea of architecture finding a new purpose without losing its soul. With the Orsay briefcase, I sought to achieve that same balance: a classic, almost architectural silhouette designed for modern life. Its profile is slim, yet it conceals several spacious pockets. A sturdy structure, thoughtfully designed to carry what matters most.

Every Michino bag is named after a place in Paris. A neighborhood, a street, a garden, a monument. These are places I have wandered through, observed, and felt a connection with. I was born in Japan, and Paris taught me to see the world differently: the lines of its façades, the light reflecting on the Seine, the elegance of everyday gestures. By naming my bags after these places, I wanted to share with you my personal vision of this city I love. To carry a Michino is to carry a little piece of Paris with you.
